INTERIM GENERAL PRESBYTER SEARCH
Interim General Presbyter Person and Position Description
The Presbytery of South Louisiana, undergoing a restructuring of staffing seeks an Interim
General Presbyter. The Presbytery Council on May 26, 2009 approved this Person and
Position description. The Presbytery of South Louisiana prayerfully seeks a gifted
individual with a proven track record in Interim Presbytery ministry.
Role and Responsibilities of the Interim General Presbyter:
A. Interim General Presbyter Person Description
- Demonstrates consistently a mature growing faith in Jesus Christ that is
central to life and ministry.
- Is ordained as an Elder or Minister of the Word and Sacrament in the
Presbyterian Church (USA).
- While possessing a deep love for and knowledge of the constitution of the
Presbyterian Church (USA) including a passionate desire to strengthen its
connectional nature.
- This individual will uphold the polity of the Presbyterian Church (USA) as set
forth in the BoO actively educating and encouraging pastors and sessions to
act within the boundaries of the Constitution of the PCUSA.
- Empowers others in their ministries including being able and willing to work
with committees and task groups to accomplish the mission of the
presbytery.
- Possesses a passion to strengthen the ministry and mission of
congregations as well as the ministry and mission of the presbytery.
- Possesses the skills and desire to provide pastoral care to church
professionals
- Possesses skills in conflict resolution.
- Enjoys traveling and working outside the office.
- Knows how and when to advocate for change and to work for consensus.
- Understands the financial side of conducting the affairs of a presbytery.
- Has a proven track record in transitional reorganization.
- Has familiarity with addressing legal matters in which the Presbytery is, or
may become, involved.
B. Job Description: The interim General Presbyter will assist the Presbytery
Council and the Presbytery in these four areas.
1. Administrative
- Coordinate, supervise and oversee the presbytery staff in consultation with
the presbytery General Council. The staff includes: Associate Presbyter Pro-
Tem, Office Administrator, Volunteer Treasurer, Stated Clerk, Recording
Secretary and any contract employees.
- Carry out the IGP’s functions as described in the personnel manual.
- Staff and resource: COM, COPM, COR, Nominating Committee, Judicial
Commission, and the DPRRR committee.
- Serve as the representative/spokesperson of the presbytery (installations,
ordinations, celebrations, and administrative commissions), larger church,
and ecumenical functions.
- Alert the Presbytery Council of any business of the Presbytery that has been
approved but still needs to be completed.
- Assist in carrying out decisions of the Presbytery Council related to any
pending or newly arising legal issues.
- Coordinate with the Synod Administrative Commission and the Presbytery
Council on any issues related to church property.
2. Financial Management
- Assist the Presbytery General Council, the presbytery and therefore the
churches of Presbytery to become financially responsible.
- Assist the Presbytery in discerning and discovering new models of ministry
that reflect the financial resources that are available.
3. Pastoral Care
- PRESBYTERY
- Nurture an atmosphere of openness and trust in the presbytery
through personal contact with pastors and churches
- Serve as a colleague in ministry with and as pastor to pastors and
their families, and to church professionals of the presbytery;
- CLUSTERS
- Encourage the effective use of the clusters to promote trust,
fellowship and connectionalism.
- Help the clusters to discover ways to do programming together and to
support each other.
4. Transformation
- Work with existing consultants to bring about Transformation in the
Presbytery.
- Be able to share with cluster groups how to bring about transformation in our
local churches and our presbytery.
- Be willing to work with the Presbytery on a bottom up, grass roots, changes
rather than a top down change, guided by the polity of the Presbyterian
Church (USA).
5. Strategic Planning
- Facilitate the development of a cohesive Vision.
- Define goals and objectives.
- Development of a structure to support the vision and mission.
