COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN URBAN MINISTRY
INSTITUTE OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS

Covenant Presbyterian Urban Ministry Institute was formed in 1997 when the
members of Covenant Presbyterian Church, located on St. Charles and Napoleon
Avenues since 1878, closed their doors, sold their building, and dedicated  the sum
of $1,000,000 to be used for the formation of the Institute, the result of a long time
vision held by the Congregation.

CPUMI’s Mission is:  The mission of the Covenant Presbyterian Urban Ministry
Institute is to promote the practice of urban ministry, to develop the capacity of
individuals to serve the need of the community, and to benefit the urban poor
through the activities and programs undertaken in the process.

Since the inception of CPUMI in 1997, we have brought 5 Seminary students from
other cities to New Orleans with the express purpose of introducing them to the
practice of Urban Ministry and to the problems they will encounter in their work with
the urban poor.  As a result of their internship here in New Orleans, several
seminary students have elected to choose Urban Ministry as their field of endeavor.

We have hosted 4 Summer Urban Work Camps in which teenagers attend a five-
day session that involves them in work such as Food Banks, Habitat For Humanity,
etc.  The hope is to introduce the adolescent mind to the joys of giving back to their
community.

In 1999, we established a Food Bank that serves the low-income residents of
Central City in New Orleans.  Approximately 120 eligible families are each provided
with a 25-30 pound grocery bag twice a month.  The food is distributed out of
Berean Presbyterian Church at 1629 Simon Bolivar on the first and third Saturdays
of each month.  Our food is purchased from Second Harvester here in New Orleans.
